JACK kicks off its "JACK has a baby grand for a weekend" weekend with pianist Angelica Sanchez and poet Christian Hawkey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Hawkey). We're pairing pianists with poets in an effort to cross-pollinate our music and literary audiences. Angelica Sanchez, praised by The New York Times for her “seeking out the lyrical heartbeat within any avant-garde storm,” is the founder of The Angelica Sanchez Quintet (with Marc Ducret, Tony Malaby, Drew Gress & Tom Rainey) and has performed with many notable East Coast jazz and avant-garde musicians, including Ralph Alessi, Susie Ibarra, Trevor Dunn, Tony Moreno, and scores of others. She recorded five albums as a soloist/leader and contributed to over a dozen of full-length recordings by other artists. The performance at JACK will feature her trio:Angelica Sanchez: piano, compositionswith Michael Formanek (bass) and Mike Sarin (drums)The music performance by Sanchez will be complemented by a poetry reading by award-winning poet, translator, activist and teacher Christian Hawkey. He is an author of several volumes of poetry and many chapbooks and a cofounder of a research-oriented artistic collective The Office of Recuperative Strategies (OoRS).Saturday night features Cooper-Moore with Carl Hancock Rux and Sunday features Connie Crothers with Eileen Myles. The concert is generously underwritten by Robert D.
