In September 1999,
Matvei Yankelevich and Yelena Gluzman were
angry about limpid and unresponsive theater
writing in New York City, writing that
limited itself to schmooz & reviews.
Full of tough love, the two posited an
alternative: A big 1-page broadsheet released
every 2 weeks, to stay current with interesting
performance events that come and go in
a New York minute. It would be xeroxed
and distributed through theaters and bookstores,
to minimize cost and eliminate the need
for advertising or sponsorship. It would
print interesting theater writing, from
the lyrical to the analytical, from letters
to manifestos, from interviews to proposals
for impossible theater. It would include
a select group of listings, with an eye
to the little-advertised, the short-lived,
the uncanny.
The EMERGENCY GAZETTE reigned for 39 issues, with writing by Branislav Jakovljevich,
Amy Fusselman, Luna Zeygman, Eli Rarey, Filip Marinovich, Ben Spatz; interviews
with Richard Foreman, Mac Wellman, Ann Bogart, Kristen Kosmas & Judy Elkan,
Liz LeCompte, NTUSA, Chuck Mee; with reviews and sightings and reports, with
the participation of many thinkers, writers and doers. The last issue was printed
in April 2002.
