consignment
We work with partner bookstores on a consignment basis, especially for our chapbooks and 6×6. Interested booksellers should contact: info@uglyducklingpresse.org.

+ Intern/Volunteer

Ugly Duckling Presse is a volunteer-run collective that depends on the support of interns and volunteers to keep going. Want to get involved?

We welcome volunteers on an as-needed, as-offered basis, usually on Presse Days (occasional Saturdays) during which we bind, assemble, pack, etc. You can sign up to receive notice of Presse Days by joining the Volunteers Mailing List

INTERNSHIPS are two days a week plus Saturday
We are not accepting internship applications at this time. Please check back later for upcoming internship opportunities. Here’s what an internship with UDP looks like:

You’ll work with our Managing Editor and Presse Manager to oversee the daily operations of the Presse: packing orders, promoting events, coordinating review and subscriber mailings, maintaining our database, and all the many tasks, large and small, that go into keeping the Presse running. You’ll learn how to update our website, design promotional materials, print covers, bind chapbooks, and charm reviewers. You’ll help edit, proofread, assemble, promote, and sell every one of the UDP titles we print during the course of your internship. You’ll partner directly with UDP editors on everything from fundraising to fact-checking. And we will never, ever ask you to get us coffee.

What you’ll gain: An amazing experience, a place in our community, and the skills to run a small press. Previous interns have started their own literary magazines, founded small presses, started reading series, published their own books, and become members of the UDP volunteer editorial collective.

What you’ll give: An internship with Ugly Duckling is demanding, rewarding, and unpaid. We’ll ask you for three days a week of your time: two weekdays (TBD) and Saturday.

If you are interested in interning with us, please send a hard copy of your resume with a cover letter to the UDP address below. Students, recent grads, not-so-recent grads, ABDs, and dropouts most welcome!
Thanks!

+ Apprenticeships

The 13-month UDP Apprenticeship is open only to past interns or long-term volunteers at UDP.

Apprentices work one day a week at UDP and one day’s worth at home, becoming deeply familiar with one aspect of what UDP does, and they are considered an integral part of the UDP team.

There are several fields for apprenticeships; currently these are Development (grant writing), and Publicity. However, at any given time we will only have one apprentice per field.

Apprentice duties  include: 1) about one or two hours of advanced clerical work (light bookkeeping, processing online orders, etc.) ; 2) managing interns in navigating projects specific to the apprentice’s field as well as assisting interns in their daily tasks; 3) special field-based projects; 4) occasional proofreading for books.

There is a stipend of $120/month.

We ask for a commitment of 12 to 13 months, depending on the timing of the beginning of the apprenticeship. There will be a one-month vacation in both the summer and the winter.

We send out an email to former interns and long term volunteers when applications are open.
