A READING SERIES for
EASTERN EUROPEAN POETRY

Last Sunday of each month
at the Bowery Poetry Club:
308 Bowery, East Village, NYC

The BALAKLAVA reading series was developed by Eugene Ostashevsky and Matvei Yankelevich, based in part on a web-magazine for translations of 20th century Eastern European poetry, edited by Eugene with Genya Turovskaya.

The first official BALAKLAVA event (Sunday, November 23, 2003) was a reading of OBERIU (Russian "absurdist") writers Daniil Kharms and Alexander Vvedensky, in translations by Eugene, Matvei, and others. Since that time, the series has been running monthly (with a few short hiatuses), graciously hosted by the Bowery Poetry Club from its inception, and has included a wide array of emigre poets, translators of Eastern European poetry, and visiting contemporary writers from Eastern Europe.

Currently, while Eugene is away, Matvei and Genya Turovskaya will be curating and hosting the series.
