A READING SERIES for |

The BALAKLAVA reading series was developed by Eugene Ostashevsky and Matvei Yankelevich, based in part on a web-magazine for translations of 20th century Eastern European poetry, edited by Eugene with Genya Turovskaya. The first official BALAKLAVA event (Sunday, November 23, 2003) was a reading of OBERIU (Russian "absurdist") writers Daniil Kharms and Alexander Vvedensky, in translations by Eugene, Matvei, and others. Since that time, the series has been running monthly (with a few short hiatuses), graciously hosted by the Bowery Poetry Club from its inception, and has included a wide array of emigre poets, translators of Eastern European poetry, and visiting contemporary writers from Eastern Europe.
